Asweet little nest for my cozy nest. I’ve been wanting to bring in outdoor elements to decorate my home. One thing I really like decorating my home with is birds. So I thought of making a bird nest to provide a tiny home for my new bird salt and pepper shakers. It is fairly simple and just requires some time to dry.

The inspiration came from many creatives who use yarn and Mod Podge to make decorative yarn balls. This process is similar to making Papier-mâché projects. I remember making Papier-mâché masks in elementary school out of large balloons, and icky gooey floury water. Fun times! Papier-mâché is basically glue/flour and water.  Using bottled Mod Podge works much faster and is easy to use.

Let’s get started…

What you’ll need:
  • Mod Podge (Dollar Tree)
  • Twine (Dollar Tree)
  • Brush
  • Tape
  • Sandwich bag
  • Scissors
  • Any size container

I used my daughter’s L.O.L. container. She had different sizes but I felt that this one was perfect for my nest. Any container size/type will work.

I put the container inside a sandwich bag and cut the excess plastic off.

I then taped the plastic down to the inside of the container to help it stay in place. I smoothed out the outside of the bag so I didn’t have too many lumps of plastic.

I put a big blob of Mod Podge at the center and began to loop the twine in a circle outwards. I used the brush to add lots of glue to the container. I continued to loop the twine all the way around until I reached the desired size.

I made sure to add lots and lots of Mod Podge to the top of the twine and carefully spread it all around. I probably let it dry a few hours before I removed it from the plastic. It does come off easily. But be sure that the glue is completely dry.

By the way, on the last loop, I tied extra little pieces of twine to make it more spikey and resemble branches.

This is the bottom of the nest, once it completely dried.

This is the inside of the nest, once it completely dried.

That’s it!

My little bird nest with the adorable Shaker Family all nestled up. Mama Salt and Baby Pepper are so cute.
